Purpose

In Bulgaria, as well as in Eastern European countries, exclusively alkaline batteries have been used in mines for decades. Today they are inferior in almost all technical aspects performance and price of lead-acid batteries. In general, the battery is subjected to the aggressive mine atmosphere and to the direct impact of spilled electrolyte (NaOH, KOH, H2SO4). This circumstance, combined with the fact that the battery box is practically earthed (via the locomotive and the track or via the charging table), also determine the significant leakage currents.

They are widely used in the rolling stock of rail and non-rail transport (locomotives, cars, electric cars) as traction, starter, stationary and as auxiliary sources of electric current.
